Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
FNI completed a master plan in 2013 for International School of Tanganyika, located on two
beautiful campuses in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania. The master plan analyzed the facilities not only
in terms of their condition, but also in terms of their adequacy for 21st Century inquiry based
learning. The master plan established three phases aligned with the School’s financial means,
and eight strategic projects to transform the campuses. The master plan was quickly adopted
and detailed design and construction has begun on the eight projects.

One of the challenges of this project is the tropical climate. Building shade into the exterior campus
enables students to utilize these outdoor spaces for learning.

This outdoor Learning Commons area provides protection for both the intense sunlight and rains,
while allowing breezes to naturally cool the education space. By using the outdoors to extend the
capabilities of the interior, the school adds learning space for lesser cost.
