SEVEN STONES ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Regina, Saskatchewan

“FNI’s skilled team of professionals demonstrated
extreme patience and a genuine sensitivity to the
needs and concerns of the Community and
addressed them with creative solutions. At the
conclusion of the Schematic Design presentations,
it became apparent that the FNI team had
appropriately transformed the excitement, creativity
and functionality that was evident during the
consultations with designs that exceeded everyone’s
expectations.”

- Ron Christie, General Manager, Educational
Facilities, Regina Public Schools

In partnership with Number10 Architectural Group, FNI crafted Seven Stones to nurture Creative
Age learners and support Regina Public School’s Structural Innovation initiative as well as to be
environmentally sound and LEED Canada Certified. The design accommodates up to 357 students
ranging from Pre-Kindergarten through grade 8. What makes this school special is that the facility
includes an Integrated Educational Learning Centre, designed to help mainstream special needs
students more fluidly with the rest of the student population.

The atrium commons acts as a central heart, unifying the four PLCs, and providing core learning
space for multiple learning modalities. Math, reading, language, social studies, peer-to-peer,
group, and independent learning can all occur in this flexible space. Like a theatre or stage for
learning, the atrium commons can be rearranged to accommodate all school meetings,
performances and films. The community can also make good use of this space in the evenings
and weekends, as well as the gym and nutrition room.

Older Students have their Learning Community on the Second Floor with their own Commons. Each
Learning Community has its own entry and boot room, warming kitchen for students to prepare
snacks or use the sink for projects, and private individual washrooms.

Learning Studios, sized for 20-30 students, can be reconfigured for a variety of learning modalities.
Quiet Learning Studios accommodate students with special needs to help to better integrate them
with the mainstream. Each quiet learning studio has direct access to a Quiet Room designed to
support students who need separation or quiet time. Seminar and Small Meeting Rooms are
equipped for students to learn through discussion or project collaboration.

The teacher collaboration workroom in each Personal Learning Community has views to the
commons area, similar to the way a home’s kitchen would ideally have windows to a backyard
and open to the living room so parents can keep an eye on their children. The teacher
collaboration workroom also provides a think-tank type space for teachers to be able to relax,
collaborate and share ideas and research materials. Each teacher has a workstation and
designated storage area.

On the left, the Media Resource Centre is a new vision for the traditional Library. It is a flexible
space that can open onto the commons or be closed off with areas for using laptops,
collaborating or reading alone. On the right is a rendering of Learning Community 3 (grades 3-5),
looking east towards Media Resource Centre with Learning Community 4’s Teacher Collaboration
Workroom overlooking the Commons.

The Integrated Educational Learning Centre’s expanded core curriculum includes: compensatory
or functional academic skills (including communication modes); independent living skills (how to
dress & undress, navigate, personal hygiene, etc.); group learning & eating; recreation and leisure
skills; sensory awareness and control; use of assistive technology; social interaction skills; and
career education.

This conceptual night view illustrates the luminous quality of the building, contributing to a secure
environment. Security cameras located around the perimeter will increase safety as well. Along with
good lighting and technology, security will be enhanced through the culture fostered by Personal
Learning Communities for each Grade Cluster– a spirit of connectedness and ownership in the
school that inhibits vandalism.

Administrative offices “A” are located at the main community entrance to greet all incoming visitors.
If visitors are unknown they need to check in and are buzzed into the school through double doors
that lead to the atrium commons. Exit doors are locked from the exterior when they are not being
supervised. Playground Supervision “PS” from two locations allows playground supervisors to
monitor all of the playgrounds, and the bus drop-off.
